2nd Subregional VHF and Up Contest 2013

Winter is over

We had to skip the first sub-regional contest due to operator illness and the bad weather. So, finally spring is back and we are back in business

Setting up the 8-by-6 element 2m antenna started on Friday around midday in perfect weather. DL2LSM and DK3WE got additional help by Peter, a local SWL. All went smoothly but for a broken 4-fold power splitter and a missing 36m long guying line. The latter we must have forgotten during our last stay in JN59RF. Saturday we sat up an additional 3-by-6 element 2m antenna with newly built antennas by Jens, DH0LS in order to test them a bit. Additionally, a small setup for the higher bands up to 24 GHz was erected to hand out some points for the needy ones.

The contest on 2 started reasonably with about 70 QSOs during the first hour. Then disaster struck with DL5YYM — the main operator in the evening and morning — getting sick and having to leave. So, we had to re-prioritize and DK3WE did almost all the remaining operating with some help by DL2LSM and DL9GRE. Unfortunately, the station was unmanned for about 3 hours during early morning time. Most likely we missed a couple of good contacts during morning inversion.

A  nice surprise has been EA4LU calling in and giving us an ODX of more than 2000km. ES propagation is very rare so early in the year. Lucky us…

Conclusion

It has been a successful test for the new built antennas. They played well. Therefore, we will put eight of them on our main antenna system in July.

We would like to thank SWL Peter for his extensive help during station setup and dismantling.

So, we hope to see everybody – and hopefully a few more – in July from JO61JF, again.

Results: DF0MTL – JO61JF

Operators: DG0LAW, DH0LS, DK3WE, DL2LSM, DL5YYM, DL8WQQ, DL9GRE, and SWL Peter
